Today we took a large step and played a modified version of a larger social 20 game in social studies 8. The class was divided into smaller nations and collected resources, learning the value of trade in order to secure themselves and build an army. First, I had the nations draw and colour flags and then I handed out their resource blocks. Using a 10 sided die, I rolled and handed out food, wood and rock resources, in which they could trade in for army cards.  Overall, it was the first step in helping them understand the value of conflict and trade in an expansionist worldview. Next week, game modifications in which they think of ideas like building forts and making trade alliances.
